The current public UL 498 revision dated June 20, 2024 has an effective date of June 20, 2026 in the Intertek Standards Update Notice. For buyers, the practical issue is not just whether a receptacle carries a certification mark, but whether the exact model, markings, and supporting records are aligned before shipment.
What actually changed in the June 20, 2024 revision?
The official UL 498 standard record on UL Standards & Engagement lists four changes in the June 20, 2024 revision:
- Clarification of requirements for receptacle grounding terminal — 29.1.4
- 15 & 20 A receptacle conductor markings — 12.6.2, 30.8.1, Table 59.4, 123.1, 123.5, Table 193.4, 193.1.6A, Figure 193.1, and Figure 193.1A
- Revision to Table 193.4
- Editorial correction to the PLASA reference in 7.2
The corresponding Intertek UL 498 Standards Update Notice states an effective date of June 20, 2026 and says reports not updated to that version by the effective date will be withdrawn.
Why this matters on the purchasing side
Buyers usually do not review the full standard text during an order cycle. What they can review is the exact certification record, the device marking, the package marking, and the instruction sheet tied to the SKU being purchased.
That is where this UL 498 buyer checklist helps: it turns a standards update into a document check buyers can actually run before a shipment is released.
The 8-point pre-shipment checklist
1) Confirm the exact standard reference on the certification record
Ask the supplier for the exact certification file number, model number, and standard reference used for the product record. For products covered by the current public UL 498 revision path, buyers should check whether the record has been updated to the June 20, 2024 revision rather than assuming a general “listed” claim is enough.
2) Verify the product record in Product iQ or the certifier’s database
UL Solutions describes Product iQ as the place to verify UL certification data on products, components, and systems. Use it to verify the exact model and manufacturer information shown on the record. If the product is certified by another NRTL, ask for the equivalent current record from that certifier.
3) Review the grounding terminal language
The Intertek SUN adds explicit wording in 29.1.4: only one grounding terminal shall be provided on a grounding-type receptacle, and that grounding terminal shall only accept a single grounding conductor rather than serving as a connection point for two separate grounding conductors.
4) Check 15A and 20A conductor markings across the product set
The public Summary of Topics identifies 15A and 20A conductor markings as one of the headline changes. Buyers should therefore check the device body, package artwork, and instruction sheet together rather than reviewing only one of them.
5) If the SKU is sold for copper-clad aluminum conductor use, ask for the updated support
The Intertek SUN adds new and revised text in 30.8.1, 123.1, and 123.5 for receptacles intended for copper-clad aluminum conductor. In other words, CCA-related requirements are part of this UL 498 revision path for the affected receptacle scope. If the product is being sold for that use case, the supporting record should match that claim.
6) Treat WR and HG as claim-specific checks, not headline June 2024 changes
UL 498 includes Supplement SD – Weather-Resistant Receptacles and Supplement SC – Hospital Grade Devices. If a SKU is marketed as WR or HG, ask the supplier for the listing support tied to that claim. These are valid UL 498 supplement checks, but they are not the headline public change items of the June 20, 2024 revision.

7) Do not mix UL 498, UL 498B, and UL 943 into one document request
UL 498 does not directly apply to devices incorporating GFCI circuitry; the UL 498 scope points those to UL 943. It also does not replace UL 498B for receptacles with integral switching means. The current public UL 498B revision has its own effective date of July 23, 2027.

8) For Canada-bound orders, verify the Canadian certification mark on the product itself
Health Canada says certification marks must appear on the product, not just the packaging. Its electrical product safety guidance also tells buyers to look for certification marks such as CSA, cUL, or cETL on products that plug into an outlet.
For Ontario, buyers can cross-check marks against the
ESA recognized approval marks page.
For code timing, official provincial pages show BC adopted the 2024 Canadian Electrical Code effective March 4, 2025, Alberta declared CSA C22.1-24 in force on April 1, 2025, and Ontario’s 2024 OESC took effect May 1, 2025.
What UL 498 does not cover by itself
UL 498 covers attachment plugs, receptacles, cord connectors, inlets, and current taps with wiring terminals, generally up to 200 A and 600 V. Its scope also says it does not directly apply to devices incorporating ground-fault circuit interruption circuitry, which are covered by UL 943. That is why buyers should not treat a UL 498 document package as a substitute for a GFCI document package.

Frequently asked questions
When does the current public UL 498 revision take effect?
The Intertek UL 498 Standards Update Notice lists an effective date of June 20, 2026 for UL 498:2017 Ed.16 + Revision June 20, 2024.
What are the publicly listed changes in the June 20, 2024 revision?
The public UL Standards & Engagement Summary of Topics lists four items: clarification of receptacle grounding terminal requirements, 15A and 20A conductor markings, revision to Table 193.4, and an editorial correction to the PLASA reference in 7.2.
Does this revision touch copper-clad aluminum related requirements?
Yes, for the affected receptacle scope. The Intertek SUN adds and revises clauses including 30.8.1 and 123.5 for receptacles intended for copper-clad aluminum conductor. UL 498B also has its own CCA-related provisions, but that is a separate standard path for receptacles with integral switching means.
How do I verify a supplier’s UL 498 record before shipment?
Request the certification file number, model number, and standard reference. Cross-check the record in UL Product iQ for UL-certified products, or in the relevant NRTL’s public record system when another certifier is used, and confirm the manufacturer name on the record matches the shipment documents.
Does UL 498 cover GFCI receptacles?
No. UL 498’s scope excludes devices incorporating ground-fault circuit interruption circuitry, which are covered by UL 943. Receptacles with integral switching means follow UL 498B, which has a separate effective date of July 23, 2027.
