What is a NEMA 5-15R Standard Receptacle

15 amp duplex receptacle is a 15A 125V NEMA 5-15R grounding duplex receptacle built without tamper-resistant shutters. The device is UL listed as a standard receptacle format and it is not WR and not GFCI. NEC 406.12 requires TR receptacles in many residential and public-access locations, so this SKU should be specified for installations that fall within the section’s defined exceptions rather than for general child-accessible use. Seven finish options make the model easier to source for color-matching replacement work, appliance-space installations, and bulk maintenance orders.

Who Should Use This Model

  • Contractors buying standard 15A duplex receptacles for bulk indoor replacement work
  • Distributors carrying a non-TR NEMA 5-15R option for legacy spec matching
  • MRO buyers sourcing basic grounding receptacles in multiple finish colors
  • Procurement teams handling appliance-space or elevated receptacle replacements where non-TR devices are permitted

When to Choose a Different Model

  • Choose a TR receptacle for dwelling units, guest rooms, child care, and other locations covered by NEC 406.12
  • Choose a WR receptacle for damp, wet, or exterior environments
  • Choose a 20A receptacle when the project requires a NEMA 5-20R configuration rather than a 5-15R device

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Where does NEC 406.12 allow a non-tamper-resistant receptacle?

NEC 406.12 allows a non-TR receptacle only under its stated exceptions. The 2023 exception list covers receptacles located more than 1.7 m (5 1/2 ft) above the floor, receptacles that are part of a luminaire or appliance, not-readily-accessible receptacles within the space designated for cord-and-plug-connected appliances that are not easily moved, and certain nongrounding replacement receptacles permitted by 406.4(D)(2)(a).

Can TMDR15 be used behind a refrigerator?

Yes. NEC 406.12 Exception (3) permits a not-readily-accessible receptacle installed within the space occupied by or designated for an appliance that is not easily moved and is cord-and-plug-connected. A duplex receptacle in that location can supply two appliances under 406.12 Exception (3)(b).

Can this standard receptacle be installed more than 5.5 feet above the floor?

Yes. NEC 406.12 Exception (1) states that receptacles located more than 1.7 m (5 1/2 ft) above the floor are not required to be tamper resistant.

Can a 15A duplex receptacle be installed on a 20A branch circuit?

Yes. NEC 210.21(B)(3) permits 15A receptacle ratings on a 20A circuit where the branch circuit supplies two or more receptacles or outlets. A duplex receptacle counts as two receptacles for this rule.

Can TMDR15 be used in dwelling units, guest rooms, or child care areas?

No. NEC 406.12 requires listed TR receptacles in dwelling units, hotel and motel guest rooms and guest suites, child care facilities, and other listed public-access occupancies unless one of the section’s exceptions applies.

What does non-TR mean on this receptacle?

Non-TR means the receptacle does not contain tamper-resistant internal shutters. TMDR15 is a standard duplex receptacle and should not be presented as a TR model.

Is TMDR15 evaluated to UL 498?

Yes. UL states that receptacles are evaluated to U.S. standards including UL 498 or UL 60320 for compliance and safety. A standard duplex receptacle should therefore be described as UL listed only when the listing is real and documented.

Is this a weather-resistant or GFCI receptacle?

No. TMDR15 is a standard indoor duplex receptacle. It is not WR and it does not provide GFCI protection.
