When to Choose a Different Model
- Choose 15A Single Pole Toggle Switch when the light is controlled from only one location.
- Choose a 4-way switch when the same lighting load must be controlled from three or more locations.
- Choose Standard Toggle Wallplates at the same time if the order needs matching covers for a finished installation.
- For broader sourcing risk, review our UL/cUL certification and electrical sourcing risk guide before placing repeated device orders.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is the TM-2 15A 3-way toggle switch used for?
TM-2 is used when one light or load needs to be controlled from two wall locations. Common examples include stairways, long hallways, and rooms with two entrances. It should not be treated as a standard single pole switch unless the project wiring and product instructions support that use.
How is a 3-way toggle switch different from a single pole switch?
A single pole switch controls a load from one location. A 3-way switch is used as part of a pair so the same load can be controlled from two locations. The terminal logic is different, so buyers should not substitute one type for the other only because the toggle face looks similar.
Why does this 3-way switch not have ON/OFF markings?
A 3-way toggle switch normally does not use fixed ON/OFF markings because the toggle position depends on the other 3-way switch in the circuit. In one use cycle, the up position may turn the light on; after the other switch is operated, that same position may not mean on.
Can TM-2 be used where the project only needs one switch location?
A 3-way switch may be wired for single-location control in some cases, but that is usually not the cleanest purchasing choice. If the project only needs one wall control point, a dedicated single pole switch is simpler for specification, stocking, and field replacement.
What should buyers check before ordering 3-way switches in bulk?
Buyers should confirm the switch type, 15A 125V rating, UL/cUL listing, UL file number E327438, UL 20 coverage, grounding method, terminal style, color schedule, and wallplate requirement. For 3-way projects, also confirm whether the order needs matching single pole or 4-way switches.
Does a 3-way toggle switch require a neutral wire?
A standard mechanical 3-way toggle switch typically does not terminate the neutral on the switch itself. The switching conductors use common and traveler logic instead. If neutral conductors are present in the box, they should remain handled according to the project wiring method and product instructions.
Where does TM-2 fit better than a dimmer or smart switch?
TM-2 fits projects that need simple mechanical two-location control without dimming, scheduling, sensing, or app-based features. That can be useful for property maintenance, stairway replacements, and basic hallway lighting. If the load type or owner specification requires electronic control, select a rated dimmer or smart device instead.

3-Way Switch Terminal Notes for Common and Traveler Wires
5-Step Quick 3-Way Wiring Guide
For standard mechanical 3-way toggle switches only. Always turn off power, verify the box is de-energized, and follow the terminal markings on the device body.
- Power Off & Identify the Circuit: Turn off the breaker and confirm both switch boxes are de-energized with a voltage tester or multimeter. Verify that the load is controlled from two locations, not one.
- Tag the Common Wire: Before removing the old switch, identify and label the wire connected to the common terminal. The common terminal is often darker or marked COM, but always follow the device marking.
- Identify the Traveler Wires: Locate the two traveler conductors between the 3-way switches. Keep them separate from the common wire so the circuit is not rewired as a single pole switch by mistake.
- Connect Common, Travelers, and Ground: Connect the tagged common wire to the common terminal, connect the two traveler wires to the traveler terminals, and connect the bare copper or green grounding conductor to the Green grounding terminal.
- Mount & Test Both Switches: Fold wires neatly into the boxes, mount the switches, install wallplates if required, restore power, and test that either switch can turn the connected light or load on and off.
